MITIGATING CLIMATE CHANGE
Amidst the challenges posed by climate change, Creative Initiative for Enterprise Development (CIfED) has undertaken a steadfast commitment to mitigating its adverse effects in the Teso sub-region. Recognizing the urgent need for action, we have strategically focused our efforts on sustainable initiatives
Collaborative Forestry Management
In collaboration with the National Forestry Authority, CIfED oversees 17 community groups engaged in the restoration of 50 hectares of the Atigo Forest Reserve. This initiative serves as a pivotal entry point, fostering the adoption of tree cultivation for both commercial and domestic purposes. Since its inception in 2017, approximately 20 hectares have been successfully replanted. The promoted tree species for commercial use include pine, Eucalyptus, Musisi, Grivelia, Terminalia, jackfruit, avocado, mangoes, and bamboo. Additionally, CIfED places a strong emphasis on preserving and promoting indigenous tree species like Shea butter, tamarinds, mangoes, musisi Mugavu. The CFM is managed by a dedicated committee comprising 12 elected members, working closely with the CIfED management team to ensure effective program management.
Establishment of Tree Seedlings Nursery
In collaboration with Arise Forestry Enterprises, a youth-led organization, CIfED has established a central tree nursery in Atingi along Kaberamaido Dokolo road. This nursery plays a crucial role in supplementing the accessibility and availability of tree seedlings. CIfED supports the youth group in marketing seedlings, sourcing tree seeds, and promoting contractual commercial tree plantations, thereby generating jobs and employment opportunities for the youth. This decentralized approach makes economic sense for rural communities due to factors such as efficient transportation of seedlings, better provision of various species, preservation of indigenous tree species, wider distribution of economic benefits, and the transfer of means of production to end-users.
Water for Production
CIfED has supported a lead citrus farmer from Abangasi Farmers Association in acquiring a solar pump from NAADS Operation Wealth Creation. The pump is utilized for irrigation in the citrus farm and seedling production. A 10,000-liter capacity tank has been installed in Alwa Sub County near the Atigo Forestry Reserve, facilitating irrigation and crop production. This initiative aims to enable CFM groups to produce seedlings on a commercial scale, engaging in horticulture as an income-generating activity. By reducing dependence on the Atigo Forest Reserve for livelihood, the community gains access to safe water for home consumption, consequently reducing the incidence of waterborne diseases.
Agro Forestry
In addition to assisting farmers in establishing tree plantations within the forest under CFM, CIfED actively promotes the establishment of woodlots at the household level on privately owned land. The organization advocates for agroforestry using forest gardening approaches to enhance food security and nutrition at the household level. This multifaceted approach empowers communities to engage in sustainable practices that not only combat climate change but also contribute to local livelihoods and environmental conservation.
